It alludes on the one hand to Mary, Joseph, and the Christ Child, and on the other hand to God the Father, the Holy Ghost (in the shape of a dove), and Christ. The two trinities, the one on the horizontal plane and the other on the vertical plane, bind the heavenly and the earthly spheres together according to a pattern that became common in the sixteenth century.
