Artist: Carl Frederik von Breda (1759–1818)
Swedish portrait painter
Work location: Stockholm, London
Depicted people: Lukas von Breda d.ä.
Title: The Artist's Father
Object type: Painting
Description: Standing next to a storm-beaten coast, this man in his black gown recalls different images of death. As in Ingmar Bergman’s film The Seventh Seal. The painting is, however, a portrait of the artist’s father, Lucas von Breda. An average adjuster, his job was to investigate accidents at sea. This explains the special background and the depiction of the model as an emissary of fate who appears when vessels founder. The painting is also a good example of influence on portraiture at that time.
