Title: Three Russian Dancers

Description: Degas has used pastels to capture the movements of three Russian dancers in a landscape. They are probably doing a gopak – a traditional Russian-Ukrainian Cossack dance. Russian folklore and culture were fashionable in Paris at the turn of the 19th century. Degas painted a series of pastels of Russian folk dancers. The models are believed to be from one of the many touring folk dance groups that performed at cabarets and vaudevilles in Montmartre where Degas lived.
