Description: The subject of peasants working in the fields was introduced in French art by Jean-François Millet in the mid-19th century. It also became a central theme within realist painting. It had a lasting popularity and was one of the key subjects in the later phase which is called Naturalism, represented by artists such as Jules Bastien-Lepage, along with the Swedish-born artist Hugo Salmson, who lived and worked in France and often painted young women at work. These paintings are examples of how Salmson combined harsh realism with a salon-like style. In the midst of the sweetness, the motifs reflect the hardship of the girls’ life.
